7. Top 10 ways to make you a Good Parent

“Teaching our children to live a quiet, sane, and balanced life is one of the most important parental tasks of our day.”

― Brent Top

Becoming a parent is a magnificent feeling. It gives the utmost satisfaction about the creation of human life. However, this also brings great responsibility to the parents. It is the responsibility to nurture children in a healthy way, impart positive values to them, and make them socially productive as well as responsible citizens of the world. These children are bound to add value to not only their families but to society and the entire world. We need to examine this issue in great detail considering its importance in a person’s life.

What is Good Parenting?

Good parents need to be good persons first. They need to be ideal for their children. Their balanced approach in life helps them weigh situations with patience and their respectful behavior with everybody becomes a lesson for their children automatically.

Attributes of a good parent

These are some of the main attributes required in the parents:

Care: Parents have to take care of their children for not only their physical needs like food, dresses, toys, books, school education, entertainment etc. but also of their healthy physical and mental development.

Communication: It is very important for the parents and the children to communicate with each other regularly. The communication gap from any side may lead to disastrous results.

Discipline: Discipline has got its own importance in life. The children should learn value of time. Our affection towards them also requires us to teach them the value of discipline in life. If parents show discipline and adhere to the punctuality of time, their children are bound to follow.

Healthy Relationship: It is very important that a healthy relationship is built between parents and their children. This is based on the premise that the children should neither be shy of dealing with their parents nor be over-friendly to the extent of being indisciplined.

Honesty: An honest behavior shown by the parents goes a long way in the life of their children. They learn it to be the best policy.

Love: Love can prove to be the biggest binding force in the family. One can solve a lot of problems with its help. It would create a good family environment. If dealt with love, the children do reciprocate in the same way.

Quality Time: “Your children need your presence more than your presents.”

Jesse Jackson

As they grow, the children keep exploring the world of their own and want to share it with their parents. Costly gifts cannot, certainly, compensate quality time that they want to spend with their parents.

Respect: “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.” James Baldwin

Therefore, if parents behave with the children in a respectful and affectionate manner, they will beget respect.

Responsibility: Good parenting requires us to teach lessons of age-appropriate responsibility to the children. Responsibility should be passed on gradually to the children and their given tasks should be followed till completion. This only would prepare them to be independent and gain maturity with time.

Teaching: Parents teach their children. Some points need to be taken care of. First of all they need to be regular follow-up about the children’s studies. They should neither be too harsh nor very much lenient. It is important to make sure that the children understand their subjects thoroughly instead of cramming these.

Conclusion

These tips are just indicators for good parenting. There are many more qualities like Compassion, Courage, Humour, Thoughtfulness, Presence of Mind, Wit, Wisdom, Simplicity, Practical Approach, Helpfulness, etc. that can make a child exclaim “My Papa and mummy are the gems. They love me and I adore them.”

However, the requisites of parenting change in different ages of the children. We will explore these in my next few articles.
