“Children
are our most valuable natural resource.”— Herbert
Hoover, Ex-President of the United States of America
Yes, they certainly are. They are the pillars
on which this society, country, and the world of the future are going to stand.
And, do these children grow fast? Oh yes, they do. It seems just yesterday that
you celebrated your child’s birth, saw him learn to sit, stand, walk, talk, and go
to a pre-school. He enjoyed his time being there and, learned, unbelievably, basics
in a playful manner.
Now your darling of the hearts is a serious
student of primary school. He has got books, workbooks, exercise books,
globes, Atlas, boxes of pencils, erasers, sharpeners, Geometry boxes and color
palettes and ……… Eh! He is growing.
In this article, we are discussing these
children, in the magical age group of 6-11 years, studying in the Primary
school (classes 1- 5). I have discussed the subject of their education in
my blog “Educating through Primary years” Now, we
will look into their parenting issues and how the role of the parents takes a
different shape as compared to that of a pre-schooler.
For a clearer understanding, we take up a case
study of little Miss Anjali, about 10-year-old daughter of Rajkishore and
Bhoomika. Anjali is a student of class 4. She is part of a large family
consisting of her parents, uncle, aunt, cousins, and grandparents. Being the youngest,
she is the cynosure of all eyes. She is studying in a convent in her city and is
good at studies. Her parents want her to come out as a holistic person. They
take up their parenting role quite seriously and keep pondering over their own
growth & development needs as parents. Rajkishore is a businessman but took
out time to surf the internet for searching on this topic. He and Bhoomika read
about it and could come out with the following details:
Parents have to wear different hats
at different times, depending upon the need of the children in their various
ages. These roles for the parents of the primary school students are given in
the order of the importance of the role, as follows:
5. Facilitators: It is true
that modern parents are more facilitators but for the children of this age
group, this role has the least importance. The parents act as providers of
their basic necessities, toys, luxuries, dresses, entertainment, school fees, school
transportation, gifts, and many other small as well as big items. However,
children take these for granted and the parents also feel this role to be just
a routine one.
4. Friendly guides: The
children of this age group crave for proper guidance. However, it must not be an imposition. It is best taken when given in a friendly atmosphere. It also needs
to have moral content in it to help the children become decent members of society and make their world a beautiful place to live. It can be done by telling
them moral stories; showing and quoting personal examples; using proper
language in front of them; taking immediate corrective action in case of any untoward
behavior from them etc. For example, Anjali found a pen lying in the play-
ground. She immediately deposited it in the school office, remembering her
mother’s instructions. This is one example of how children can learn about moral
issues in a practical manner.
3. Educators: It is a very
important role of the parents. They know the best about high and low points of
their children’s education. They only need to take out time from their busy
schedules to teach their children regularly. They do not need to spoon-feed
them either but help them develop capacity to understand their subjects. It
becomes the primary duty of the parents to make their children take up regular
studies, finish their home tasks, and revise the school lessons preferably by
making point-wise notes. If parents become careless in this regard, studies of
their children are bound to suffer. Helping children to make their study
time-table and ensure its proper execution is the primary role of the parents.
They must make sure that the children are also active in co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities of the school. The parents must also control the
screen-viewing time of their children. This can be done by limited their
viewing of Television programs, mobile phones, and computers. This not only distracts
them from their regular activity but may cause the problems of poor eye-sight,
hearing, and disorientation.
2. Discipline setters: Discipline is very important part of one’s
life and cannot be taken lightly. Parents can set the best example by their own
life. They have to make the children understand the value of time and the
importance of punctuality in life. The parents must ensure that the children
are well behaved also. This is best done by their exemplifying it. The usage of
the golden words like “Please”; “Excuse me”; “Thank you” and “Sorry” must be
made mandatory for everybody to use in the house. This will automatically become
a part of their persona. A disciplined and well-mannered person is liked
everywhere.
1. Providers of emotional support, love, and care: The small
children look for these as the first requirement from their parents. In these
times, when, sometimes, both the parents remain away from their children for
long hours during the day, due to their job or business or profession, it
becomes all the more important for them to first be epitomes of emotional
support, love, and care for their children. You may provide them material things
in plenty but these cannot compensate for the joy of one hug or kiss of the
parents. Their loving look, sympathetic soft words, encouragement, pats, and
kindness build very strong bridges between them and their children that remain
intact for a long time to come.
